My Adventure

To conclude this series with HF Healthcare, I wanted to write a poem that summed up the message I’m always trying to convey through hemophilia education and advocacy. Yes, hemophiliacs do have to adjust their lives around their disorder. Yes, this may impact their lives significantly. But ultimately, when you understand exactly what’s going on with your body, you’re able to maintain a relatively normal life. For a lot of hemophiliacs out there, treatment is literally all they need to be able to function completely normally. I want children to understand that this is why understanding hemophilia is so important. Power and freedom come from knowledge and understanding. This is was something that took me a long time to learn. When I was growing up, a lot of information about hemophilia was presented to me, but none of it ever really seemed important. I would just think, “My blood is awful. Why should I care about the specifics?” I think this tends to be the attitude for a lot of children. But I believe that through educating young patients about their hemophilia, we’re able to empower them. They’ll feel more comfortable with themselves. They’ll be able to visualize their treatment, which makes it easier to cope with. They’ll also be able to understand that just because their lives are different, it doesn’t mean their lives are worse.

Thank you so much to HF Healthcare for letting me do this series. It’s been so much fun, and it’s something that I’ve wanted to do for many years. I will continue to blog for HF, but not with these poems. I hope readers keep checking back, and keep enjoying the content.

Thank you,
Michael Bishop

Keep the adventures coming with HF Adventure Connections. Our next event, Junior Go Kart Racing Day, is coming up on January 23rd, 2016 in Sacramento. We invite you and your children with a bleeding disorder to come out to the race track, grub on some food and bond with other kids and families in the hemophilia community!
