Bleeding Disorders Awareness Spotlight: Kelsey

Bleeding Disorders Awareness Spotlight: Kelsey

Find out why Kelsey was told she shouldn’t date her soon-to-be husband with hemophilia and how she dealt with that.

1. Tell us about yourself.
My name is Kelsey Reinegger. I am married to a severe hemophiliac (B). I am a 26-year-old stay-at-home mother of two beautiful girls.

2. What setbacks have you had along the way?
Some of the set backs I have experienced being married to a hemophiliac are insurance issues and moving. Not every state has the same insurance policy and some have wait lists for state insurance. If we wanted to move out of state we would have to check the state’s insurance policies first. Also, way way back before we started dating, I was told to not be with a hemophiliac. I was told hemophilia was a horrible, scary disease that I should not pass on to my children. I obviously did not listen.

3. What advice would you give someone who needs motivation & encouragement?
I would tell someone who needs motivation and encouragement to open their eyes. There are so many people who have hemophilia that have done so much with their lives. My husband had a brain bleed at a young age and was told he would be permanently in a wheelchair by the age of 18. He is now 26 years old and an amazing, outgoing person. He surfs, mountain bikes, kayaks, and is an awesome father. Anything is possible!

4. What is the most surprising thing you’ve learned about yourself?
I have learned to become more open to other communities. The hemophiliac community is so awesome. Every person I have met in the hemophilia community has been the sweetest, kindest, most accepting people ever.

5. How do you give back to the community?
I am a proud supporter of HF Adventures Connections. I also attend the annual Central California’s Fundraising crab feed.
