Bleeding Disorders Awareness Spotlight: Amit

Amit is a special effects animator from India who was lucky enough to get treatment and believes hemophilia is his strength.

1.Tell us about yourself.
I am Amit from India and I am 23 year old. I am a web developer and an animator. Making spacial effects and general videos of myself is my hobby.

2. What setbacks have you had along the way?
When I was born, my family didn’t even know about hemophilia in the area where I used to live. No one knew about hemophilia. My parents had four boys and they lost them because they all were hemophiliacs. In those days, there was no treatment for hemophilia in India. So, my parents always used to experiment on me which was suggested by neighbors. Poor parents were very emphasized by my family. After some years, my Father came to know that there was an NGO in Delhi. Since then, we settled in Delhi. When my Father came to know that the treatment for hemophilia was very costly, he couldn’t bare it. He decided to leave us when I was six years old, and he never came back after that day. My Mother had to take all the responsibilities. She managed her one hemophiliac boy along with three young daughters.

3.What advice would you give someone who needs motivation and encouragement?
I feel hemophilia is my strength. Hemophilia changed my life and sated a goal that never would have been possible if I were a normal boy.

4. What is the most surprising thing you’ve learned about yourself?
The most surprising thing that I have learned so far is Happiness. Being happy and positive allowed me to come over my struggles. Stress causes your problems to double.

5. How do you give back to the community?
Hemophilia Society Delhi supported us every time. Even for my education too. When I turned 18, I started volunteering at NGO. We started a Youth Group in 2011. This group consisted of 25 boys with hemophilia. We stared getting involved in various actives at state levels. I feel so proud when many hemophiliacs know me. I am lucky that all my joints are healthy and I don’t get that many bleeds now, even though I have severe hemophilia A.
