The Problem

KANNUR: The Hemophilia Federation has said that though the number of hemophilia patients has increased considerably in the state, we don’t have sufficient facilities for proper treatment and also the support offered to the patients from the Karunya Benevolent Fund is not sufficient to meet their treatment expenses.

“There are around 100 hemophilia patients registered in Kannur and Kasaragod district alone and this is the condition everywhere in the state but, only very few hospitals in the state have the service of the hematologists and there is hardly any laboratory that has the facility to detect this disease,” said Dr K Sudhakaran, president of the Kannur chapter of the Federation.

Though the disease has been included in the list of diseases eligible for financial help under Karunya, it does not sufficient as the aid under the scheme has a maximum ceiling of Rs two lakh, said the society.

“In normal case this is sufficient only for the treatment up to two years and in some serious cases that much money is needed for six months of treatment. Hence the government should abolish the ceiling to facilitate the treatment of such patients,” said the doctor.

The Solution to Better Treatment

Taking into consideration all these aspects, the state government should initiate steps to provide modern treatment to hemophilia patients in all government medical colleges and district hospitals, and also there should be facilities for pre-natal diagnosis, carrier detection and inhibitor screening to facilitate the detection and treatment of the disease, they demanded.

Moreover, all such patients should be given disability certificate and also they should be given government employment, pension, demanded the Federation, which also said that the government should implement the recommendations made by an expert committee set up under the director of health education.
